Welcome to HaitiHub! *Free online Haitian Creole conversation classes*
What is HaitiHub?
This site is the very first step in a much larger project aimed at helping people learn to speak and understand Haitian Creole. It's an online conversation class that offers all the practice in pronunciation, listening comprehension, and real-time speaking not available through the limited number of Haitian Creole books out there. It's laid back, supportive, and free! (Although donations are always welcome. To make one, click the PayPal donate button above.)
It is also our hope that these conversation classes will help foster an active community of people working for Haiti and the Haitian people. Of course, for HaitiHub to evolve in this way, we need you! So take a class, engage your fellow students and teachers, share ideas, resources, and support, make friends, stay connected, and spread the word!
Who is HaitiHub for?
The 8 week Intro to Creole conversation class is for you:
- If you're a newcomer to the language and want to hear pronunciations, abbreviations, and Creole's spoken rhythm in real-time. Perhaps you're preparing for a volunteer term and want to make the most of your time and efforts by picking up as much Creole before you arrive.
- Take the 8-week Haitihub Intro to Creole conversation class and go from Creole newcomer to communicator in 2 short months!
Advanced conversation classes are for you:
- If you speak basic Creole already but want to build on your existing language skills with targeted conversation practice, role-plays, and specific vocabulary, such as medical Creole. See the current class offerings to learn more about these advanced sessions.
How does HaitiHub work?
The classes all run as computer-to-computer Skype conference calls with a maximum of 5 speakers per conversation class. Practically all volunteers in Haiti use Skype to communicate with folks overseas. Click here to learn more about this fantastic, totally safe, totally free service.
To join a HaitiHub class:
- Download Skype and make sure your audio, mic, and connection work (web-cam not required).
- Fill out the new student registration form here.
- Browse the class list and sign up for some classes.
- On the day and time of your class, sign into Skype. HaitiHub will call you to join in the conference call. The class will begin and last one hour.
- Have fun and pick up what you can! Classes will be friendly, encouraging, and very low-pressure! Check your shyness at the door! Creole is such a rich, fun language and you'll be learning it with other wonderful people. So speak up!
